As part of the “Move your CORE” project, our psychology student Jan Sonnek proposes tours around Heidelberg. Here’s his second Komoot tour suggestion: a bike ride to Ladenburg.
On your bike, get set, go: today’s cycle tour starts at the university’s Blue Tower. Follow the Neckar towards Wieblingen, cycle down Klostergasse to Neckarhamm and turn left after a few houses to continue along the Neckar.
For anyone unfamiliar with the Neckarwiese in Wieblingen, it’s the ideal place to come for a Sunday stroll! At the basketball court, turn right onto the narrow asphalt bike path, which we follow for the next five kilometres. In Edingen, we take a break at the Eiscafé Leone to enjoy an ice cream on the steps overlooking the Neckar, breaking the record for eating ice cream before the wasps notice us. Sufficiently cooled, we head off towards Neckarhausen.
We cross the river at the railway bridge and arrive at the Ladenburger Neckarwiese. It’s worth taking a quick detour to Ladenburg’s small but pretty old town: narrow streets and rose-clad walls of old half-timbered houses, lots of cafés and excellent ice-cream parlours, cheerful people. After a short rest, our tour takes us back up the Neckar. After another three kilometres or so, you’ll come across the “Zum ANKER” restaurant, which is well worth a visit. You’ll then soon see the Schwabenheim sluice, and after cycling along the Neuenheimer Feld for four kilometres, you’ll find a small path that takes you to the outdoor swimming pool Tiergartenbad.
We then cycle in the direction of the hospital to the zoo, past the multi-storey car parks and barriers to the Botanical Garden on your left. It’s always worth stopping here for one of your last tour breaks. The park is full of benches and pretty plants. After this little rest, we can push our bikes over the weir to get back to the university on the other side of the Neckar. Alternatively, we can continue on to the Neuenheimer Neckarwiese to bring the day to a close.
Enjoy following the cycle route – we’d love to hear about your experiences on this or any other tour! Here’s the link to our „Move your CORE“ Neckar bike tour.
Our series for first-year students continues tomorrow on a more serious note: we’ll discuss international aspects and provide advice on study abroad!
