I am a working student as a developer in „Geomer GmbH“ in Rohrbach (Heidelberg).

The company „Geomer“ dives deep into geospatial data and geo-intelligence. Weather data, traffic analytics and also flood safety systems.
How does a typical day look like for you and what are your tasks?
A typical day starts off with a meeting with my supervisor. My supervisor gives me my tasks for the day. For example I have to code a specific program that will be further used by senior developers. I analyse how problems can be solved with pen and paper and later begin to write the code. Often data is missing, therefore understanding data is very important.
What do you like the most about your job?
Analysing the Data is the most important and interesting part of my job. With the analyses you can find interesting facts, for example if the speed limit of a highway is being followed or not.
How did you get the job?
I played in the 2nd league for the table tennis club TSG 78 in Heidelberg. In November 2018 I was practicing with one of the players, who is the Chief Technology Officer at Geomer. We spoke about the company he was working for and my background. After the Christmas break I asked him about a working student job. He made an appointment with me on my birthday. And well, the interview went well and I got the job.
What kind of tips do you have for other students?
I would urge students to apply for a part-time job to gain work experience in their field of study. The formal way of approaching any kind of job is to use official websites like Indeed, Stepstone and Xing. And if you are from a foreign country, you should learn German. For example I am learning German at the Volkshochschule. It is an important advantage in your application. Germany has a lot of opportunities in IT and of course networking is key. Socializing with people can help you to expand your networking circle. Thereby you get great opportunities finding a Job.
